because why not

you are a different kind
of grace    jasmine flower
on window sill   balmy
spring night  the smell of
tea leaves wilting in a pot
buzz of tiny moths to a
single bedside light  dust
on frames  mirror undone
meaning eyes-shut blind.

adore

thank you cherish + love you immeasurably
your text made me cry your words fell
like hail across my screen your emojis
zinged off walls with rainbows purple
hearts you’re a person in my life who gets it.

Wild weather

Ragged shores smacked
By waves spun by boats
Wake of water on sandstone
Circle of gulls overhead frilled
Gills breathe underwater
These cliffs remember
It doesn’t matter anymore
All eroded sunk to
Ocean floor you know
What I’m happy.

Green Deep

banksia faces
palm fingers
blackbutt burnout
maiden hair
fern carpet
sunken tide
reeling out
flathead shadows
rocks corroding
lightning strike
gum rustle
high wind
goddess breath
on my skin.

Loving

Lines in earth
etched
by time eroding soil
cracked boulders
animal
tracks stories swirls
of a snake in
desert
sand remember the
shapes on our
planet
that pre-date us stand
in awe of all this majesty
do your best to
uphold
her

grey heron

startled into flight by dogs
chasing spirit rabbits over
dunes   weekend quietly
arriving delivered by lazy
waves against rocks   yellow
wattle puffs dance above
waxflower bursts coral
gumblossom just birthing
from silent seeds sun slicing
footprints on sand  wind dips

drips warm nectar   endless
mercury glare across shallow
cliff pools emerald moss thread
long hot run fall to water arms
spread wide fingers through
turquoise surprise jellycrystal
saltwater blue abyss heaven
waterfall of bouncing daisies
white petal eyelashes fluttering

the feeling of invisible

if a woman stands on the shore
letting waves rush up knees
she’s either having a brilliant
day / very very bad one i was
having both at the same time
foam sucking my shins i fell
under a spell ocean horizon
let salt water lick pressure
off me.

meditate

can you sit your

mind in your

body where it

belongs instead

of wobbling over

the past / just put

it in your toes

imagine it in your

hips be the skeleton

you actually are

allow yourself

to have bones.

drop

Your suitcases on the grass
in a patch of sun
flick them open let
socks books t-shirts flop
out expose it all to further
investigation by the elements
let ladybugs + snails crawl
over your baggage Surrender
it to dew + frost.

Not from here

two crimson rosellas preening
touching beaks kissing Cape
Town doves calling in the background
Reminding me of pink clouds The other
part of me that is African those soft-calling
birds they do it Every time pull me
across oceans To gardens colours
mountains and Faces my body never
forgets are missing.

day 203

daily poem / poetry blog

the fever passed
i watched lorikeets
squabble for seed
under palms as
4pm shadows spread
over red bricks
a tiny blessing
of peace like
a breeze on
my neck lasted
until the night
set right in.

the future

Lost you in blazing Sunday light
Found you one shaky autumn
morning
Who you are to me &
Who i am to you will never
be solved but i need to
sometimes wrap my arms round
you
that’s just how it is
(ghosts aside)

if you’re listening

i know you expect
to see something here

some specific words
your name but you're

not gonna get it you've
had all you're ever

gonna get more than
you were entitled to

if i'm honest + let's be
honest now can we

on this day the silence
is golden + my smile is

cheshire don't use the
internet to look me

up you won't find one
more whisper it's ash

in the grate of last
year's burned out fire

escape is not too much
of a word.

disappearing act

today i’m going away
out back out bush
escaping with tents
hiking boots torches
thank god
i need that peaceful
green i crave
nature’s soul-cleanse
forest-bathing sleeping
close to the dirt that
made us.

apathy

you told me you feel
sad because the earth
is dying and we're too
caught up
distracted
to notice we give no
fucks to the state of
anything but the world
that happens online
i agreed -
then wrote a laptop
poem  about it.

july 16

discussing the implications
of a creative life after
30 inspired by a radio quote
heard earlier:
average australian author
salary is 11,000 per year
i dropped my phone screen shattered
we laughed watching surfers catch
big waves i drew with stones in dirt
as monday crested over us both rendered
useless good for nothing but coffee
confessions & chasing threads back
to youth decisions we made
would we make them differently?

Shhhhh

Eventually
the world stops
spinning You quiet
it for a moment Hold
the ball on it’s axis midair
between bounces Remember
to breathe Deep in your body
right to your toes + You’re not
looking forward/back Just sinking
into light you didn’t know existed
’til you made your world stop spinning
Gave yourself a chance to watch from
the sidelines Drama unfolding Untangle
storms you’re involved in Lie down Quietly
take a nap Catch peace on the fly like it’s
contagious A virus + The only thing that can shake
it is your own galloping out-of-control wild horse mind.
